This is a great holiday baking to do with my son and he had so much fun making these with me.

Even though it is a simple plain buttery cookie recipe you will have to take those little efforts or additional two steps to make it into a shaking sprinkle glass cookie.

How to Make Shaking Sprinkle Glass Cookies?

This recipe actually starts with a basic plain buttery cookie dough. The dough needs to chill before you start rolling and cutting, so plan accordingly. You can cut out the cookies using any shape of cookie cutter.

I used star, flower and heart shaped cookie cutters here because we are making for Christmas, but you can use any cookie cutters you like, as long as you have them in two different sizes so you can cut out centres.

You can turn those plain Cookies into sprinkle Glass Cookies simply by cutting out the centres of the cookies and filling them with your favourite colourful hard candy. The transformation takes place in the oven, when the candy melts making it look like coloured glass.

I used Fox Candies here which is easily available in the grocery shop or online sites, but you can use any other hard candy. Just make sure the candies are hard and transparent so they will give best result.

And finally, I filled these cookies with edible colourful sprinkles and voila, your cookies are now shaking sprinkle glass cookies. The perfect treat for the Christmas, holidays or any other festive occasion!

If you’ve never made this Sprinkle Glass Cookies before, this is the time you need to try. Because these cookies are very unique, Gorgeous and so very festive!

The Trick is the Order of Steps

1] Cut out different shapes cookies from Plain sugar cookie dough.

Make the cookie dough according to the recipe below.

Tip for helping cut-out cookies keep their shape:

Roll out the dough on a parchment paper or baking sheet, then place this paper or sheet in you baking tray. Cut the desired shapes of your cookies.

(Your cookies will look like perfectly shaped if you do this)

2] Cut centres for the candy window.

Use the same shape small cookie cutter to cut the centres of those cookies.

(see the video carefully)

3]  Bake the cookies and fill the centres with candy

Pop one tray of cookies in the oven for 10 minutes.

Remove and cool it and put one candy in each cookie centre.

Put these cookies back in the oven for about 5 minutes.

Keep an eye on the cookies. You just want the candy to melt.

If left in the oven too long, the candy will bubble and then your candy windows will be full of bubbles.

If needed, rotate the baking tray midway through this cycle so that the candy evenly melts in all the cookies.

4] Assemble the cookies and fill with colourful edible sprinkles

Heat the sugar and little water on high flame and make an instant sugar syrup or chasni of 2 strings or you can melt the chocolate in microwave and fill it in a piping bag.

For the bottom cookies, add your favourite edible sprinkles onto the glass window. Take the top cookies and drizzle thick sugar syrup or melted chocolate around the rims. Immediately sandwich the 2 cookies, press it gently and keep aside.

Allow the cookies to dry for 10 minutes before moving.

Pro Tips For this Shaking Cookies:

  • Measure your all ingredients correctly! Adding too much milk or flour to the recipe is the most common mistake. So, I suggest you to use a weigh scale for best result. If you don’t have one then use measuring cups or spoons.
  • Be very careful while adding milk otherwise your dough will be sticky and the cookies will not perfectly be turned out.
  • If your dough looks sticky and then keep it in a refrigerator and go ahead.
  • Try not to get any local hard candy on the plain cookie as it will look messy. Always use good quality candies and they must be transparent and hard. I used Fox Candies; this gave the cookies a wonderful crystal-clear look.
  • You only need to fill the centres of the cookies with one fox candy or if you will fill them with any other crushed candies than make sure You only need to fill the centres of the cookies about 2/3 of the way full with the candy, otherwise you run the risk of it overflowing onto the cookie.
  • Use small size of edible sprinkles.
  • Make sure you wait for the cookies to cool before lifting them off the baking sheet, they need to set and firm up.
  • Over baking will make the cookies burn so watch out!

A big yes, you can definitely use them, just skip the milk and add egg.

How Long will these cookies keep for?

In an air tight container and also in dry environment these cookies will keep for up to a week.

How do you keep cookies from Sticking?

Humidity is the enemy of these cookies as it makes the “glass” sticky. So, you should store these cookies in a single layer or place parchment in between layers so that they don’t stick together.
