These cookies are simply chocolate sandwich cookies with unbelievably good milk powder cream filling. I love the colour and texture of these cookies. It’s such a simple recipe but the result is super delicious.

Like their custard cream cousin, this Sweet Heart Sandwich Cookies recipe requires custard powder to give them their unique flavour.

Onto the filling! It’s Butter + Sugar + Milk Powder. That’s it! Super simple and incredibly tasty. And I highly recommend swiping a spoonful once you make it, just for quality control purposes of course.

If you’re making these in valentine week like I did, it’s absolutely time to treat for your valentines and yourself too.

This will explain how I was able to make the Sweet Heart Sandwich cookies (With letters LOVE) look like a store-bought biscuit. No worries if you don’t have them, though; you can just cut the cookies and use a tooth pick to prick them.

If you use this sweet heart sandwich cookies recipe, they will taste the same with or without the cutters or cookies stamp. You can purchase the Cookie Letter Stamp here.

If you love cookies then take your love to the next level with this homemade sweet heart sandwich cookies recipe made with only few simple ingredients!

Ingredients for your Sweetheart Sandwich Cookies:

Butter

You need to have softened unsalted butter. I use normal white Amul unsalted butter itself.

Sugar Powder

This recipe requires Normal powder sugar. One can easily get powder sugar at home. It has a good texture for desserts and also dissolves easily.

Cocoa Powder

A good qualiy of Cocoa Powder gives nice flavour to cookies.

Custard Powder

Vanilla custard powder I used here. It gives an amazing flavour to these cookies. Combination of vanilla custard powder and cocoa powder are match made in heaven I say. The best part in making this cookie is that, you can mix match any favourite flavours according to your palate.

Milk Powder

I used milk powder along with butter and powdered sugar for filling these cookies. When milk powder combines with Butter and sugar it gives a milky texture and flavour.

Baking Powder

Best quality and perfect amount of baking powder always ensure perfect texture of your cookies.

Gel Food Colour

The best type of food colour is gel-based. Any local water-based food colour is not really pigmented. Moreover, even though most grocery stores have food colour, you need to know that not all of them are of good quality.

How to make Sweetheart Sandwich Cookies?

In a bowl, cream butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Now, fold in all dry ingredients and gently mix. To it add milk to get the perfect dough consistency.

Add best quality food colour to it. (Its optional but because I’m making these for Valentine day It must be gorgeous and Red so I added few drops of edible gel food colour)

Meanwhile, preheat oven at 180 C. On a baking sheet, flatten the dough and using a cookie cutter cut to desired shape. With a cookie stamp emboss the letters or name of your choice. Bake it for 15 minutes or until edges turn brown. Place it on a cooling rack until it is completely cool.

How to make Milk Powder cream filling?

It’s Butter + Sugar + Milk Powder. That’s it! Super simple and incredibly tasty.  Adjust with a few drops of milk; just don’t make the filling too soft.

In my opinion, cookies are incomplete without a cream filling in between. It is hands down one of my favourite cookies ever and once you make it, you’ll definitely agree with me. Filling gives the ultimate taste and texture to the cookies.

Choice of filling is endless! Be creative and mix match flavors as per your palate taste.

Other types of Filling

Fillings like chocolate buttercream, ganache, buttercream, cream cheese, jam, ice cream, peanut butter, toffee sauce with praline, the list is endless. Filling like ice cream, or sauce need to be refrigerated to get set. Other filling set at room temperature and can consume immediately.

Tricks and Tips for the perfect Sweetheart Sandwich Cookies

Now, we all know that desserts always have an oomph factor when they are baked. Like Shaking Sprinkle Glass Cookies look so pretty, these sweetheart sandwich cookies are nothing without the perfect crisp texture and creamy filling in between.

These Cookies are basically your delicious chocolate cookies. What makes them so dreamy are the various textures you get when you bite into it. In addition, what is truly better than cookies which are just the perfect amount of crispy outside and creamy on the inside?

While they look so obviously beautiful, you need to nail the texture and also take care of other minor things. Trust me, it’s more about your attention to the recipe and the tips over practice that will get the most perfect Red Sweetheart Sandwich Cookies.

  • Use Room Temperature Butter

Cold butter will not at all mix well with your sugars. This butter-sugar mix is what is the base of your cookies. The combination of both is what will form the structure of your cookies.

  • For filling Always Use Softened Butter

For making filling butter also needs to be softened. Softened ingredients get mixed in really well and create smooth fillings.

  • Use Powdered sugar

Powdered sugar gets incorporated with butter and creates a homogenous mixture. If you were to use caster sugar or granulated sugar instead, the big sugar granules would never dissolve and you would end up with grainy filling instead of a smooth and silky one.

  • Using Right amount of Baking Powder

When you use the right amount of baking powder you ensure perfect cookies. Baking powder provides a good lift and makes the perfect cookies.

  • Always use Good Quality of Gel food colour

The best type of food colour is gel-based. Any local water-based food colour is not really pigmented. Moreover, even though most grocery stores have food colour, you need to know that not all of them are of good quality.

Can we substitute custard powder for Cornflour powder / starch?

Yes, you can very well substitute custard powder for cornstarch. But, remember to add flavour while mixing the cookie dough. (I used Vanilla Custard powder and it already has vanilla flavour) You can add any flavour according to your preference. The measurement of the ingredients remains same.

I hate to admit it but I did end up eating more than half of the batch I made. Either I have zero self-control or these sweetheart sandwich cookies are too good to be resisted. Make them for your valentines and share with me your experiences.

As you probably know, I give a lot of my cakes and cookies to my neighbours as there’s usually just too much for us to eat ourselves, even if my parents are here, too. Not only are my neighbors delighted, but I get feedback, so it’s a win-win. The reviews aren’t always this lovely. Sometimes they are simply, “Next time, use more sugar.”

I hope you enjoy these Sweetheart Sandwich cookies as much as my family and neighbours.
